Cost of Wire

On this website i've found that the wire costs from £14.95
http://www.glow.co.uk/el-wire-glow-wire-products.html

But also looking at this they have a light spray can with a 70cm x 70cm glow in the dark material
this at a cost of £29.95

Light Video

After Effects animation?
At the moment i'm thinking of creating a light video to play in the back of my possible posters Here inspired by this video found on vimeo, i feel it works well, because of the music, and the dark scenery around where the light painting has been created.

Shadow Experiments 5

I then went onto to create another image, in this instance my brother was live and he wasn't a shadow and then my cousin was the shadow, here looking down on him to intimidate him, and make him scared, as you will see in the image below. This image was edited in photoshop.
Colour and Black and White and original

Shadow Experiments 4

I then went on to use my cousin and my little brother as models in the shadow, making a much more life like affect, and some outcomes quite sinister, as it then went on to become about child abuse and violence towards a child. To create a sinister look i used a torch to create the look and then slightly altered them in photoshop.

Shadow Experiments 3

Here i then tried to get across a feeling of intimidation, and possible violence starting with the cut out character standing over the child so it gives the viewer a simple inderstanding of intimidation. In the next image you see a raised arm to show a possibility of abuse.

Shadow Experiments 2

I then changed the background to something white this worked well, and the image came out stronger so i stuck with this idea, during i used a small statue to then create the image of a child possibly holding the fathers hand. In a next shot you see a shadow of a cross this shows that the father and son share something, in this instance the loss of the fathers wife and the sons mother.

Shadow Experiments

Firstly to create the shadows i created the shape of a person out of card paper, i then shone the light onto it, using a dark background.
The dark background created quite a moody image, and i felt it wasn't that strong as the shadow merges with the colour of the background.

ShadowPlay

Here relating back to my shadow idea, i found this quite visually interesting how the different shapes help to create the look of a person depending on how the light hits those objects.

Without one, we wouldn't understand the other

Recalling from a feed night i went to, Jonathon Barnbrook spoke and he said, without one we wouldn't understand the other, for example we need sadness to understand what happiness is so i then became thinking of breaking my idea into two parts, showing the opposite of what im trying to show in the other. As one of my designs is the light, this is trying to show the joy and happiness of what a child can bring to an adult, and now i want to show the negative side, but this being the child and how some parents will abuse their children, through violence, possibly sexually also, crushing the child's confidence and making visible marks all over there body.

To show this i again wanted to show motion and time lapse, this would be to show the speed of how it happens, this would be separated into 3 parts, one- showing happy expressions doing an everyday task, two the expression suddenly changes and you see what may happen and 3 the final image will show the speed of how the parent has hit the child and try to shock the viewer.

Mannequins and models in electroluminescent wire

From reading Aprils issue of creative review i came across an article about a Photographer called Michael Taylor here he wrapped mannequins and models in electroluminescent (EL) wire this work can be seen at, www.michaeltaylorphoto.com.

I liked the odd shapes and forms that were created from reflecting off of the mannequins, and felt maybe then the light doing that could reflect the emotion of the character what was covered in the electroluminescent wire.

Different surrounding

I then took it to a different area, going to the woods, and started again with light painting, i felt this worked well as i could position the people sitting or leaning, this worked well until it was dark and quite difficult to see the outline of the trees or the area. The results are below.

Different Light

I then began to use a larger light, this brought out a completely different look, it was strong and appealed to me stronger than the laser pen (below this post).
Here are some of my outcomes below

Here the images come out more vibrant, and visually have become more appealing to look at.

Trial and Error

I then began to experiment with time-lapse photography, using a Canon eos 350d camera, i set it to take for 20 seconds and started using a laser pen, my experiments are below.

Here you can see the outcomes didn't work, the light from the laser pen was dull, and didn't make much of an impact.

UVA - Speed of light

Laser technique.
I looked on the creativeReview website and on there i saw another approach at using light, here they used lasers. UVA were commissioned by Virgin Media to create 'an immersive light installation celebrating 10 years of broadband in the UK'. It comprises a series of laser-based experimental light works which flow through the labyrinthine spaces of the Bargehouse, the four-storey ex-warehouse on London's South Bank.

Here you see how they create imagery from fibre optics.

Tagged in Motion

A new technique towards light graffiti, the project was based around Graffiti and whether you would need a solid background, they explored this and used motion capturing to place the virtual graffiti in the empty space in a large hall, three cameras record his position and follow is virtual spray can, DAIM was the one creating the work, for him to see it in his environment he wore visual eyewear.

Visit to london - Tate Britain

During the weekend I visited london and went to the Tate britain museum.
I was interested to find out that at the end of JMW Turner career he became fascinated with light through Goethe's theory of light. While there there was an experiment, the light would shine onto the arm and below two shadows would appear, one blue and the other a natural shadow colour, i found this interesting and may incorporate this into my design.
Goethe observed that shadows might be coloured, even though they could be thought of an abscence of light.

The next experiment, showed a box, to which you then would see a grey disc, turn the light on and you had to stare at it for 10 seconds and then turn the light off, then had to keep looking at the box, after a while the grey disc would become coloured, each time you would close your eyes it would also change from grey to red.

There was also a chandelier which seemed interesting, at certain points the lights would turn on and others turn off, this was related to morse code.

JMW Turner's experiment with light
Susan Hiller below, seemed interesting to look at, her main image was this light image, and hidden behind it was the image of a man, i felt i could work with this and do a similar technique, it almost creates a spooky/ghostly look, possibly could be used to remembering someone.

Cling Film and Sellotape Statue

From speaking with my tutor he explained how he had created a model, using entirely cling film and sellotape, to which he then placed fairy lights. I felt this might be a good idea to work with so with the help of my cousin, i set to it to see how it would look, and if the model would be sturdy enough to help support my idea, the steps are below in images.

PROPOSAL

The Idea i have chosen to look at
PARENTS
At the moment my initial idea is based around time-lapse photography, using light to create the shape of a mother and father, for this i will try and communicate how having a child could light up somebody's life, using the light made mother and father to emphasise this. There will be a sub outcome which will be to create a brand entitled 'Mother and Father' and create a poster that advertises mothers and fathers. Our posters and adverts should be aimed at Potential 'foster carers'. The point of this brief is to make independent research to develop ideas that will help me to develop a final outcome, and also to understand the word PARENTS looking at it in different ways and creating a new outlook upon the word.

At the end of this brief i will produce(compulsory) -
1-Blog - a digital Sketchbook Containing research and ideas development
2-Sketchbook - For all of my manual experimentation, development and research
3-Mother and father branding and advert
4-Evaluation - 500 words
5-Exhibit at the end of year show.

The other deliverables will depend on my chosen pathway and will be negotiated with my tutor.

RESEARCH
The word that this is associated around is PARENTS, i will begin this blog with research gathered from websites, graphic design blogs e.g designweek, discussing the subject of PARENTS with family and friends, to see how other people may look at this, and what they would associate with this word, also research from magazines and books e.g CreativeReview.
To help me with this i have now subscribed to the CreativeReview, allowing me full access to their website and also receiving 12 issues throughout the year.

I will go into this project with an objective point of view, leading away from the obvious to create a new way of looking at PARENTS.

EXPERIMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
To start i will begin experimenting with light in time lapse photography, creating different visuals, using different colours of light, then creating thumbnails of poster layouts to place these light models on and finding different visuals of these kind of work, so that i have a better understanding of how it may look and how it would come out, possibly creating, business cards, letterheads, posters and possibly a zine

Realisation
From talking with my tutor, iv come up with the idea to create some models, made from cling film and celetape and possibly place lights to create the look of a lit up person, im also thinking of creating a brand with this, similar to what we already have to create but integrating my characters and possible time-lapse photography into this.
I will be taking photographs to present, printing on card, creating postcards and possibly a short animation.

Violence

In some cases parents can be known to abuse there children, take Josef Fritzl, who took his daughter as a prisoner, and then became a parent from her children, it makes you wonder what goes through peoples minds, because it is such a disturbing matter.
I came across another article, in the newspaper below:
Showing, that just an argument could cause such violence, almost using the child as a pawn in a game, to severely endure pain to one another.
